Snapped spring, dead opener, or a door hanging crooked off its track? Kamaaina Garage Doors sends an Oahu technician to your driveway, explains what failed and what it costs to fix, then gets your door lifting smooth and quiet again.
Overhead garage doors are a system: springs carry the weight, cables and rollers guide it, and the opener just steers. We service every part of that system on residential and light commercial doors around Oahu.
Garage Door Spring Replacement
A loud bang from the garage usually means a torsion spring just let go. We swap in correctly sized springs, wind them to your door's weight and re-balance the whole door.

Opener Repair & Installation
Humming motor, flashing lights, remote that only works from the curb: we troubleshoot the logic board, gears and sensors, or install a new quieter belt-drive or wall-mount unit.
Chain, belt & wall-mount openers
Wi-Fi & smartphone control
Battery backup for outages
New Garage Door Installation
Replace a dented, rusted or termite-damaged door with a new insulated steel, aluminum or wood-look composite door, sized and wind-reinforced for your home.

Off-Track & Cable Repair
A door that came off its rollers or hangs lower on one side is under heavy tension. We safely release it, straighten or replace bent track, and re-thread frayed lift cables.
Bent or misaligned tracks
Frayed & snapped lift cables
Bumped-by-car panel damage
Rollers, Hinges & Noise Fixes
Grinding and rattling usually come from worn steel rollers and dry hinges. Sealed nylon rollers and fresh hardware can make an old door dramatically quieter.

Mainland parts often aren't made for life a few miles from the ocean. Salt air eats bare steel, year-round humidity seizes hinges, strong sun cracks rubber seals, and Kona storms push hard on wide doors. We pick parts with that in mind.
Salt air & corrosion. Galvanized and coated hardware for homes in Kailua, ʻEwa Beach, Hawaiʻi Kai and anywhere the breeze tastes like the ocean.
Wind resistance. Reinforcement struts and wind-rated door options that keep wide doors from flexing in high gusts.
Termites & humidity. Steel, aluminum and composite doors that won't rot or feed Formosan termites the way solid wood can.
Sun & red dirt. UV-resistant bottom seals and weatherstripping that keep dust, rain and geckos where they belong.

Broken spring?
The Part That Really Lifts Your Door
A two-car garage door can weigh well over 150 pounds, and it's the springs, not the opener, doing nearly all of that lifting. Most standard springs are rated for roughly 10,000 open-and-close cycles, which works out to about 7 to 10 years for a typical household. When one breaks, the opener strains, the door slams, and the car stays inside.
Don't force it. Pulling a door with a broken spring, or letting the opener try, can bend panels and burn out the motor.
Replace in pairs. On two-spring doors, the second spring is usually close behind. Matching them keeps the door balanced.
Balance test every time. We finish each spring job by checking the door holds at mid-height on its own.

What Is Your Garage Door Trying To Tell You?
Pick the symptom that matches. You'll see the most common cause, how we fix it, and whether it's safe to keep using the door in the meantime.
Door Won't Open Or Stops After A Few Inches
Stop using the door
Likely cause
A broken torsion spring. Look above the door for a gap in the coil. The opener's force limit kicks in because it's suddenly lifting the full weight alone.
How we fix it
Replace the spring (both, on two-spring doors), check cables and drums for damage, then rebalance and reset the opener's travel limits.
Grinding, Squealing Or Rattling
Usable, but book a check
Likely cause
Worn or rusted steel rollers, dry hinges, loose hardware, or a chain opener that needs adjusting. Humid salt air speeds all of this up on Oahu.
How we fix it
Swap in sealed nylon rollers, tighten and lubricate hinges and bearings, and adjust or upgrade the opener drive. Most doors get noticeably quieter the same visit.
Door Closes, Then Reverses Back Up
Check the sensors first
Likely cause
The safety photo-eyes near the floor are dirty, bumped out of line, or blinded by direct sun. It can also be a travel limit or close-force setting that drifted.
How we fix it
Clean and realign the sensors, repair damaged wiring, add sun shields where needed, then recalibrate limits and confirm the auto-reverse still protects kids and pets.
Door Hangs Crooked Or Came Off Track
Stop using the door
Likely cause
A frayed or snapped lift cable, a roller that popped out of a bent track, or a door that got bumped by a car. The cables carry spring tension, so this is not a DIY fix.
How we fix it
Secure the door, release tension safely, straighten or replace the track, install new cables and rollers, and re-square the door in its opening.
Opener Hums But The Door Won't Move
Don't keep pressing the button
Likely cause
Stripped drive gear, a failed capacitor, a disconnected trolley, or (again) a broken spring the motor can't overcome. Repeated attempts can burn out the motor.
How we fix it
Test the door by hand to rule out spring problems, then repair the gear kit or board, or recommend a new opener if replacement makes more sense than repair.
Why Kamaaina
Island Service, Done The Right Way
Kamaʻāina means someone who belongs to the land. We work on Oahu, for Oahu households, and we treat every garage like it belongs to our own ʻohana.
Oahu Based
We know the drive from Waiʻanae to Waimānalo, which neighborhoods sit in salt spray, and which older homes have non-standard openings.
Clear Pricing
You hear the price and approve it before we pick up a tool. If repairing doesn't make sense, we'll tell you that too.
Safety First
Springs and cables store serious energy. Every job ends with a balance test and an auto-reverse check before we call it done.
Parts For Paradise
Corrosion-resistant hardware, sealed rollers and UV-rated seals chosen to last in Hawaii's climate, not a dry mainland garage.
A few minutes a season goes a long way in Hawaii's climate. Here's what we recommend between professional visits.
01
Rinse Off The Salt
If you live near the water, hose down the outside of the door and the bottom seal every month or two. Salt film holds moisture against the paint and hardware.
02
Lube The Right Parts
Use a garage-door silicone or lithium spray on hinges, roller bearings and springs. Skip grease in the tracks; it collects red dirt and grit.
03
Test The Auto-Reverse
Once a month, set a roll of paper towels in the doorway and close the door. It should touch and reverse right away. If it doesn't, stop using the opener.
04
Watch The Balance
Pull the opener's release cord with the door closed, lift it halfway and let go. A balanced door stays put. If it drops or shoots up, the springs need attention.
05
Look At The Cables
Glance at the lift cables near the bottom brackets. Rust spots or broken strands mean they're due for replacement before they snap.
06
Prep For Storm Season
Before hurricane season (June through November), make sure struts are tight, the lock works, and your opener has battery backup in case the power goes out.
Service areas
Garage Door Service Island-Wide On Oahu
From town to country, we cover the whole island. Don't see your neighborhood? Call or text and ask. If you're on Oahu, we can most likely get to you.
The most common signs are a loud bang from the garage, a visible gap in the coiled spring above the door, a door that feels extremely heavy when lifted by hand, or an opener that lifts the door a few inches and stops. If you see any of these, don't keep running the opener. Call us at (808) 509-0526.
Can I open my garage door with a broken spring?
We don't recommend it. Without the spring, the full weight of the door is on you or the opener, and the door can drop fast. If you absolutely need your car out, call us first so we can talk you through what's safe, or get a technician out to secure the door.
Do you service all of Oahu, or just Honolulu?
All of Oahu. We work throughout Honolulu and East Honolulu, the Windward side from Waimānalo to Lāʻie, Central Oahu, Pearl City and ʻAiea, the Leeward and West side out to Waiʻanae, and the North Shore.
Should I repair or replace my garage door?
Springs, cables, rollers, openers and single damaged panels are usually worth repairing. Replacement starts to make more sense when several panels are dented or rusted through, a wood door has termite or rot damage, or the door is very old and needs multiple major parts at once. We'll give you an honest comparison on site.
Does salt air really damage garage doors?
Yes. Near the coast, salt in the air settles on springs, cables, rollers and hinges and speeds up rust, which leads to noisy operation and earlier part failures. Galvanized and coated hardware, nylon rollers, regular rinsing and a tune-up every six months help a lot.
Can you make my old opener work with my phone?
In many cases, yes. Depending on the model, we can add a smart Wi-Fi hub to your existing opener or install a new opener with built-in app control, battery backup and a keypad, and program all your remotes and car buttons.
Are wind-rated garage doors important in Hawaii?
Your garage door is usually the largest opening in your home, so if it fails in high wind, pressure can get inside the structure. Wind-rated doors and reinforcement struts help a door hold its shape in strong gusts. We can tell you what fits your existing door or recommend a stronger replacement.
How often should a garage door be serviced?
Once a year is a good rule for most Oahu homes, and every six months if you're close to the ocean or open the door many times a day. A tune-up includes lubrication, hardware tightening, a balance test, cable and roller checks, and a safety-reverse test.
